According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for physician assistants is projected to grow 20% from 2024 to 2034—much faster than the average for all occupations. The median annual salary for PAs was $133,269 in 2024.

Physician assistants work as part of a collaborative healthcare team to examine, diagnose and treat patients in a variety of medical settings and specialties. Demand for PAs is expected to remain especially strong in rural and underserved communities, where access to primary care physicians may be limited.

To become a physician assistant, students must complete a master’s degree from an accredited PA program and earn their licensure in their state of practice.
