51黑料 alumna Denise Blane keeps moving closer to fruition of her documentary about an injustice in Fort Wayne. Her in-progress film is gaining acclaim from others, and she hopes it can serve as an agent for change in society and the justice system.

Blane received the $10,000 grand prize at the 32nd Heartland International Film Festival on Oct. 7 in Indianapolis. PitchDox, presented by the Indiana nonprofit streaming service Hoodox, awarded Blane the prize for her upcoming film, 鈥淛ustice 4 Three.鈥 The film-pitching competition included 27 other contestants.

Blane, a 2023 Communication: Film program graduate, explains the impetus and purpose behind her film:

鈥溾楯ustice 4 Three鈥 is a project that holds a special place in my heart. It’s a compelling and thought-provoking documentary that shines a spotlight on a deeply distressing event鈥攁 hate crime that unfolded in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in early 2021. The film meticulously weaves together the harrowing stories of Anderson Retic, Joshua Cooper and Jaylin Rice, three young black men whose lives were irrevocably changed by an act of hatred. While the incident occurred in early 2021, the full details only came to light during the sentencing in August 2023.

鈥淎t the heart of 鈥楯ustice 4 Three鈥 is the exploration of these three individuals and the dreams and aspirations that defined them. Their camaraderie, friendship and shared struggles made them relatable and endearing figures, not only to their community but to the world.

鈥淭he core of this documentary lies in its examination of the racially motivated hate crime that shattered their lives. We follow Jaylin Rice as he battles not only physical scars, but the emotional trauma left in the wake of the tragedy. The community’s response is a powerful movement鈥擩ustice 4 Three鈥攚hich stands unwavering in its demand for accountability and justice.

鈥淭hrough interviews with the victims’ families, chilling video evidence and Jaylin Rice’s powerful testimony, this documentary exposes the systemic challenges and deep-seated prejudices that perpetuate such devastating events. It is a stark reminder of the urgent need to address racism, hate crimes and the pressing call for change.

鈥溾楯ustice 4 Three鈥 is a raw and emotionally charged documentary that challenges viewers to confront their own biases and prejudices. It serves as an inspiration for audiences to join the ongoing battle for a more inclusive and equitable society.

鈥淭he film will also explore critical questions, such as the delays in achieving justice despite compelling evidence, the persistence of such events in our world, and the extent of this issue within Fort Wayne over the last decade. It aims to be a catalyst for change and to bring an end to such violence in all communities.鈥

Blane said the digital-format film will be 90 minutes long and she anticipates a June 2024 release. The production budget is $25,000.

鈥淚 am extremely grateful and excited about the support we received, and are still receiving, from the PitchDox competition,鈥 Blane said. 鈥淭his funding means a great deal to me, my family and to our production team. We would not be where we are without the support of the community and everyone over at Hoodox. We plan to commence production next month, and we are actively seeking additional funding to meet our budgetary goals.鈥

Those interested in contributing to the production costs for 鈥淛ustice 4 Three鈥 should email justice4threedocumentary@gmail.com for more information.

With family, friends, colleagues and community members in the audience and others watching via livestream, Rev. Dr. Eric Albert Zimmer was inaugurated as the 10th President of the 51黑料 on Saturday afternoon in the USF Robert Goldstine Performing Arts Center.

Ron Turpin, the senior advisor to the president, presided over the event. Mass took place Saturday morning at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, with Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, as the celebrant for the Eucharistic liturgy. He received Fr. Zimmer鈥檚 Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity.

USF Board of Trustees Chairman Bill Niezer completed the formal installation of Fr. Zimmer in the inauguration ceremony.

鈥淲e are confident that you, along with faculty, staff and administration, will be ever more deeply rooted in the Catholic and Franciscan traditions of faith and reason, and that you will lead the 51黑料 to engage its diverse community in learning, leadership and service so that God鈥檚 kingdom may continue to be realized in our world,鈥 Niezer said to Fr. Zimmer.

In his inauguration speech, Fr. Zimmer spoke of the importance of USF emphasizing its Catholic faith. It is vital, he said, to demonstrate the ways that USF is a unique university, “a place where it is possible and exalted to be a person of faith.”

Fr. Zimmer stressed that administration, faculty and staff must focus on the mission of the university on a daily basis in order to continue to make USF stand out as a Catholic institution of higher education. The Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration have asked him to strengthen the university’s Catholic and Franciscan identity.

“This is a much different place than it was in 1944 or 1956 or 1993,” Fr. Zimmer said. “Where do we want to be in another 130 years? What will we look like?”

Among the immediate plans Fr. Zimmer shared with the audience is the intent to hire a full-time campus priest, update the curriculum to be “better or more focused on our Catholic identity,” and promote a Catholic Foundation scholarship to attract more Catholic high school graduates.

“Day in and day out, we must work on our mission,” he said. “If we don’t, someone else will.”

Fr. Zimmer emphasized he has high expectations for USF, but also that he has faith in the ability to reach them.

“We will go from strength to strength,” he said. “We will be what we are, only much more.”

The ceremony included messages from Bishop Rhoades; Sister Clare Reuille, Provincial Treasurer of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration; Dr. David Wantz, President of the Independent Colleges of Indiana; Dr. Dan Torlone, Chair of USF Faculty Senate; Benjamin Mauch, USF Alumni Association President; and Elizabeth Laker, USF Student Government Association President.

The Invocation was offered by Rev. Dr. David T. Tyson, President of Holy Cross College. USF student Angela Bougher performed the National Anthem. The University Singers, USF鈥檚 a cappella mixed student choir under the direction of Elizabeth Piercy, performed via video.

The Inauguration Day events also included a luncheon at Brookside Mansion and tours of campus for visitors. The evening concluded with a formal dinner in the USF Robert Goldstine Performing Arts Center Ballroom.

Fr. Zimmer began his term as USF president on July 1, 2020, upon the retirement of Sister M. Elise Kriss, OSF.

More information about Fr. Zimmer can be found on the page.

Wit, wisdom and wild characters of Dr. Seuss spell fun for 鈥淪eussical鈥

As 51黑料 junior animation major Louis Soria transforms into The Cat in the Hat for 鈥淪eussical,鈥 the university鈥檚 musical, he鈥檚 not sure it鈥檚 much of a transformation.

Soria feels a strong connection to the gangly, bold and mischievous Cat.

鈥淚鈥檓 a fairly outgoing, ecstatic individual, so this role kind of suits me well,鈥 Soria said. 鈥淭he Cat in the Hat is very wild, and multiple times he鈥檚 referred to as an 鈥榓gent of chaos,鈥 in the footnotes. That is exactly where I belong.鈥

The Cat in the Hat is just one of the many familiar, beloved characters who come to life as part of 鈥淪eussical,鈥 which runs March 22-24 and March 29-31 at the USF Robert Goldstine Performing Arts Center, 431 W. Berry St.听 All evening shows start at 7:30 p.m. and there are three 2 p.m. matinees.

The musical, which features Horton the elephant and many other Dr. Seuss creations, is expected to strike a chord with children of all ages. The cast includes ages 5 on up, and the audience is likely to follow suit.

鈥淚 wanted to do something that is family-friendly and fun,鈥 director Brad Beauchamp said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 so much drama going on in the news. To be honest, this is what we need right now. It鈥檚 exactly what we need.鈥

Other lead characters include Horton the elephant played by Jordan Gameon, Gertrude McFuzz played by Kennedy Lomont and Mayzie La Bird played by Tia Hackbush. Lomont is a sophomore English major and Hackbush is a senior Health & Exercise Science major. Fifteen performers in the 34-member cast are USF students. Gameon is a test engineer at BAE Systems who has been involved in a number of local productions.

鈥淭his is my first one with college students,鈥 said Gameon, who played Buddy in the Civic Theatre鈥檚 鈥淓lf: The Musical鈥 recently. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e just having so much fun, it鈥檚 infectious. That extra energy is fun to be around.鈥

Lomont and Hackbush both pointed to that energy, as well, saying the production鈥檚 uplifting spirit is reflected in the fun the cast is having reproducing the Dr. Seuss characters.

Both are enjoying their roles.

鈥淕ertrude McFuzz is a shy bird who has an unrequited love for Horton the elephant and the whole musical she tries to pick up the courage to get Horton to notice her,鈥 Lomont said. 鈥淥ne of the songs I sing is 鈥楴otice me, Horton,鈥 and he still doesn鈥檛 get it.鈥

Hackbush describes Mayzie as a carefree soul who lives her life without any regret, taking on new adventures with an outgoing personality.

鈥淚 think the kids who come to the show will enjoy the costuming,鈥 Hackbush said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 bright and colorful and, for me, a good step back into my childhood. It鈥檚 absolutely a show for all ages.鈥

Beauchamp said he believes one of Dr. Seuss鈥 greatest strengths in his writing is the message his stories deliver. 鈥淎s much as you think they鈥檙e cute little children鈥檚 stories, they鈥檙e laced and laden with lots of messages,鈥 Beauchamp said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 about treating everyone equal, even people who are different than us,鈥 Hackbush said. 鈥淥verall, being friendly to your neighbor and understanding others.鈥

鈥淪eussical鈥 dates and show times:

  • Friday, March 22, 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 23, 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, March 24, 2 p.m.
  • Friday, March 29, 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 30, 2 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, March 31, 2 p.m.

Tickets for 鈥淪eussical鈥 are available through the ArtsTix Community Box Office at 260-422-4226 or tickets.artstix.org. Doors open 30 minutes before the show for general seating. Ticket prices are $17 for adults (free for USF students, faculty and staff) and $15 for seniors 65 and older and children under 18. Group rates of $12 per person are available to groups of 20 or more. The production is made possible by the generous support of USF alumna Toni Murray.

Another brick in the wall

Parsley鈥檚 work gives art students the big picture on making their passion a profession.

soca students working on mural

Getting a job in art need not seem like hitting a brick wall, Art Department Chair and associate professor Tim Parsley tells his students. They just need to find a window of opportunity in that wall.

Arriving in Fort Wayne five years ago, with a Cincinnati murals background and a chance to impart his art and work experience to USF students, he paints a picture as big as a city block on how to make one鈥檚 passion into a job.

鈥淚 am deeply committed to helping students figure out how making art can be sustainable as a career. My class is about equipping them for the business of art. A benefit for the students is to know their artist professor is out doing this. He鈥檚 in the same trench as them. They can find their passion, stick to it and make it work.鈥

When he got to Fort Wayne, people kept asking about mural work. 鈥淲e always needed funding,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e needed a fiscal partner in the Downtown Improvement District (DID).鈥 Then Art This Way conceived the Alley Activation Project, and the DID, Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Lincoln Financial Foundation and Design Collaborative became sponsors. Three artists city-wide were selected to produce public art works downtown. One of them was Parsley and USF.

Artist Alexandra Hall had been doing local events, and was called to help. 鈥淪he met up with School of Creative Arts (SOCA) Dean Colleen Huddleson and me,鈥 Parsley said. 鈥淪he had the building owners lined up and a funding model since last summer. I was able to provide additional guidance through the planning stages, and I could help with the jury process. I suggested that we combine this opportunity with a course we had been dreaming of at SOCA so that students could learn the nuts and bolts of creating a public mural.鈥students working with professor Parsley on mural

Though Parsley created the mural design, the students contributed hands-on work at the downtown site and learned about the nature and meaning of public art, and the business of art, in Parsley鈥檚 class.

鈥淚 was to design it and use it to help USF students learn the mural process from beginning to end,鈥 he said. 鈥淒owntown, they helped clean and transform the wall and its color. In class, we talked about mural painting and public art, about surveying the public鈥檚 interests and engaging the community. I assigned a portable, in-house 鈥榩ractice mural鈥 that was student-designed, selected and created, which is now on display in SOCA. They also had to learn contracts, so we got into the fine print about how to get paid and protect their work.鈥

The downtown mural鈥檚 theme draws from American history, which informs Parsley鈥檚 work as an artist. 鈥淚t鈥檚 based on a collage I made previously. It鈥檚 about the greatness, the complication and the challenges of American history. Walt Whitman is present as a figurehead artist at a divided time. He spoke his time, and artists today can do the same. We also live in a divided time. Whitman represents what the artist can offer. In divided times, art can offer beauty, confrontation or maybe just a different perspective,鈥 he said.

Such artwork should be arresting, he said. 鈥淔or me, public art should engage you in aesthetic contemplation. Stop a moment. Let it inspire awe or raise new questions. It鈥檚 important for USF to be involved with this because the students begin to understand how their artistic passion can be a profession and a chance to serve the community. Let鈥檚 bring it to our neighborhoods. Interact with our world. With public art, it鈥檚 not just funding, it鈥檚 neighbors who walk by and stop and talk. It鈥檚 a neighborhood relationship.鈥

Understanding how to structure a professional life makes working in their passions possible for students. 鈥淚t may not always look like a typical 9-to-5 job, but sustaining a career as an artist is entirely possible. They must stay passionate, trust it and pursue it鈥攈ard work will be rewarded,鈥 he said.

I am deeply committed to helping students figure out how making art can be sustainable as a career.
– Tim Parsley, Art Department Chair and associate professor

In the eyes of 51黑料 football coach Kevin Donley, an impressive national honor for senior linebacker Piercen Harnish is only the beginning.

Harnish was selected as one of the 13 finalists for the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy, an award that recognizes the best football scholar-athlete in the country.

Donley sees even bigger things for Harnish in the years ahead.
鈥淚f he wants to be a CEO, he can,鈥 Donley said. 鈥淚f he wants to go into politics, he鈥檒l succeed. If he wants to be a football coach, he could do my job right now.鈥

Each of the 13 Campbell Trophy finalists will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and will be part of the 61st NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4 at the New York Hilton Midtown. The winner will be announced at the dinner and have his scholarship increased to $25,000.
Harnish is a finance major who recently began part-time work at Shelton Financial after spending time with Ash Brokerage. Harnish, who sports a 3.96 GPA, aspires to a career as a financial advisor.

The Campbell Trophy finalist honor recognizes his on- and off-field commitment to excellence. Harnish is the first USF player to become a finalist.

鈥淚 was completely surprised,鈥 Harnish said. 鈥淛ust to get in the Top 180 was an honor. To be in the Top 13, I was blown away. To be up against a guy like Drue Tranquill (University of Notre Dame; Carroll High School) is tremendous. I鈥檝e always looked up to Drue. To be in the same group, there鈥檚 no words to describe it.鈥

Harnish鈥檚 brother Chandler was a finalist for the award as a quarterback at Northern Illinois University in 2011. Chandler Harnish later spent time in the NFL after being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts.

Other brothers who have been finalists for the Campbell Trophy were Peyton and Eli Manning and Matt and Jon Stinchcomb.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a great honor and Chandler is happy for me, but he鈥檚 probably thinking, 鈥業 can鈥檛 one-up him in this one,鈥 鈥 Harnish said, jokingly.

Earlier this season, Harnish broke the 51黑料 record for tackles in a career, set by Brian Kurtz (2003-06). Harnish has three of the top eight regular-season tackle totals in program history. He was a second-team NAIA All-American last year and VSN NAIA National Defensive Player of the Year, and named as a preseason NAIA All-American this fall.

Since arriving on campus out of Norwell High School, Harnish has been an outstanding leader, Donley said.

Another part of consideration for the award is a player鈥檚 volunteer efforts. Harnish has worked on team housebuilding projects in El Salvador and Jamaica, worked with the Fort Wayne Chapter of Forgotten Children, and worked with Fort Wayne Treasure House. He also volunteers for a wheelchair basketball tournament.

鈥淗e always does the right thing and he always does things with maximum effort,鈥 Donley said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 a team player. He鈥檚 a 鈥榳e鈥 guy, not a 鈥榤e鈥 guy. His body language is always uplifting. He鈥檚 mentally tough. When your back鈥檚 against the wall, you can always count on Piercen Harnish.鈥

Harnish married his high school sweetheart, Arissa, in 2017 and they recently had their first son, Jaxson.

Harnish believes the demands on his time are all worth it.

鈥淵ou have to do some stuff late at night sometimes,鈥 Harnish said.

鈥淥bviously, things come before football when you鈥檙e a husband and father, so your priorities are changing. My time has just changed. I wouldn鈥檛 say I鈥檓 making sacrifices, but just changing my life for the better.”

A very organized person, Harnish would love the opportunity to continue his football career as a professional. But he also realizes the odds are stacked against a player from the NAIA.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 every child鈥檚 dream,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut I鈥檓 a statistic guy and 99.6 percent of athletes go on to careers outside of professional sports. For guys coming from small colleges, it鈥檚 a really big grind to get there. You see players who have earned every award in smaller college sports and it鈥檚 so hard for them to make it. There are cats coming from everywhere. But if it ever came my way, I鈥檇 jump at the opportunity.鈥
