USF Crown Point, Franciscan Health Crown Point collaborating on disaster drill

CROWN POINT, Ind. 鈥 All nursing students from the 51黑料 Crown Point and the Franciscan Health Crown Point Emergency Medical Services Academy will collaborate on a multi-casualty disaster drill at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 in the parking lot of USF Crown Point, 12800 Mississippi Parkway, Pavilion U, Crown Point.

Media are invited to cover the drill.

The fifth annual drill will involve approximately 175 people. Students will respond to a simulated four-car accident. Students will remove victims from vehicles and transport them to 鈥渄esignated hospitals鈥 inside the university, where their injuries will be assessed and treated. Instructors will monitor the students鈥 responses for a later evaluation session.

Nursing faculty and Franciscan Health emergency nurses will be supporting nursing students’ clinical judgment throughout the simulation. The University of Chicago medical helicopter will land on the front lawn of the university if weather permits. Other non-nursing students, a chaplain, a social worker and the Lake County Coroner鈥檚 department will also participate.

Traffic on U.S. Route 231 should not be affected, but businesses and residents in the immediate area of the drill are assured no emergency is taking place in the university鈥檚 parking lot, USF Crown Point officials said.

51黑料 Crown Point is a regional campus of the 51黑料 in Fort Wayne, Ind., a private Catholic university in the Franciscan tradition. USF Crown Point makes academic excellence and a values-based education available to Crown Point-area students through entry-level, bridging and graduate-level programs. Among these are six healthcare-related majors, including nursing, healthcare administration, medical laboratory technician and paramedic science. The associate of liberal studies degree includes student-designed concentrations.
