USF hosts Autism Symposium for teachers, parents and community

FORT WAYNE, Ind. 鈥 Dr. Laurie Sperry and Katherine Wells will be the keynote speakers April 10 and 11 at the Autism Symposium: To Graduation & Beyond, presented by the 51黑料 and the AWS Foundation.

The symposium will be held in the USF Robert Goldstine Performing Arts Center, 431 W. Berry St., Fort Wayne.

The event will have a strong focus each day for people who seek to learn more about autism and how to support students and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The session for teachers, counselors and interventionists, 鈥淪upporting Students with ASD in Your Classroom,鈥 will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 10. The all-day event for teachers will include a round-table discussion facilitated by area teachers, including multi-tiered systems of support for middle and high school students with autism and support for early intervention and early elementary students with autism.

Community leaders, businesses, agencies and parents are welcome at 鈥淓mployment and Home Routines鈥 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. April 10. The community event will focus on employment and home routines.

School administrators and support personnel are invited to attend 鈥淪upport Students with ASD in the School鈥 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 11. The school administrators and support personnel event will address supporting students with autism and using experts in the school to build the school鈥檚 success.
