FORT WAYNE, Ind.鈥擳he 51黑料 will inaugurate Sr. Maria Gemma Salyer, OSF, as its 12th president on Thursday, Sept. 3 in the Hutzell Athletic Center.

The inauguration will take place at 3 p.m. A reception will follow at 4 p.m. in Brookside.

Sr. Maria Gemma assumed the role of president on July 1, succeeding Dr. Lance Richey, who served as president for three years. Sr. Maria Gemma is the first member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration to serve as president since Sr. Elise Kriss, OSF, retired in 2020. 

Sr. Maria Gemma had served as executive vice president since January. Prior to that, she was the vice president for Catholic culture and student life and dean of students. She was also the university鈥檚 Title IX coordinator and a member of president鈥檚 cabinet. She served on the 51黑料 Board of Trustees before joining the campus full time in 2023.

Sr. Maria Gemma holds a doctorate in educational administration from Indiana State University, a master鈥檚 degree in philosophy from Franciscan University of Steubenville and a bachelor鈥檚 degree in theology from Ohio Dominican University. Her previous appointments included serving in campus ministry at 51黑料, women鈥檚 ministry at the University of Notre Dame, assistant director of vocations for the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration, and as an educator and assistant campus minister at Lafayette Central Catholic High School.

A two-day golf event featuring an exclusive VIP reception and popular silent auction, the Cougar Classic uses proceeds to directly enhance the student-athlete experience by providing critical funding for scholarships, equipment, team travel, facilities and other needs. This year鈥檚 event takes place Thursday and Friday at Bridgewater Golf Course in Auburn, Indiana.

As the Cougar Classic marks this significant anniversary, the university also honors founders Craig Vanderwall and Mitch Thornton, whose vision and unwavering volunteer leadership transformed a simple idea into a fundraising tradition. Dr. Lance Richey will complete three years as 51黑料 president on June 30, leaving a legacy of forward momentum for the campus.

Richey shared his thoughts on his impending departure in a recent 51黑料 magazine message to alumni and friends:

鈥淲ith the help of God, and thanks to a wonderful leadership team and an inspired strategic plan, over the past three years the university has made dramatic progress, including:

• A new mission statement that reinforces our Catholic, Franciscan identity
• The addition of new workforce development programming
• A new academic structure to support students鈥� goals
• Site expansion to three new locations in Indiana
• Substantial enrollment growth
• Greater financial health
• Record fundraising for the university

鈥淚 am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past several years, and even more excited about the great things God has in store for our university in the years to come!鈥�

The expansion Richey referenced includes sites in Gas City, Lafayette and Indianapolis while the academic structure of 鈥淧athways鈥� is designed to help students understand their paths to academic and career success more clearly. The workforce development programming addition came via the acquisition of Leffler Academy.

Richey intends to continue writing during his sabbatical. His recent book, 鈥溾�淐hampagne Times: Lawrence Welk and His American Century,鈥� published by NDSU Press, was named as the winner of the Biography: Historical category by the Independent Press Award, one of the most prestigious book award programs globally for independent authors, publishers and illustrators.

Richey said he looks forward to his eventual return to the classroom.

鈥淎t heart, I am a scholar and teacher, and there are still books to be written, students to be taught, and new intellectual adventures to be lived鈥攁nd I want to do all those things,鈥� he said in an assembly address to faculty and staff last month. 鈥淚 also have long dreamed of having more time to spend with my wife, Carol, who has sacrificed鈥擨 like to think it was a sacrifice, at least鈥攁 great deal of my time and energy to my jobs over the past dozen years.鈥�

鈥淪erving as President of the 51黑料 has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life, and I am eternally grateful to the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration for offering me this opportunity to serve the university as its leader.鈥�

Richey emphasized his appreciation extends to the board of trustees and its chair, Richard Poinsatte, as well as the leadership team, faculty and staff. After embarking on a one-year sabbatical, Richey intends to return as a theology professor in fall 2027, assuming the honorary title of president emeritus.

Olivia Tibbs received a $12,000 scholarship while Anna Hills and Emily Ousley each received $5,000 scholarships. All three students are pursuing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees.

These awards support students preparing for careers in nursing and other health professions and are designed to help reduce the financial burden of earning a degree. The Lutheran Foundation鈥檚 scholarships range from $5,000 to $20,000 and are intended to encourage students to continue their education and prepare for careers that will serve the community.

The 4+3 agreement allows 51黑料 students with Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology, Health and Exercise Science or other programs of emphasis (POE) entry into the Northeast College of Health Sciences program. Those students will be able to complete a Doctor of Chiropractic degree within three years.

Awards for undergraduate students consist of the President鈥檚 List for students with a semester GPA of 3.9 or higher and the Dean鈥檚 List for students with a 3.5 to 3.8999 semester GPA. Graduate Honors recognizes students seeking master鈥檚 and doctoral degrees who achieve a semester GPA of 3.75 or higher. Samuel Dunn (Finance and Investment) serves as a finance manager for MedPro Group. He is an active member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Fort Wayne. 

Angela Flood (Enrollment and Planning) is president of AKF Strategies. She has a background in strategic planning and public policy and is a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Carmel, Indiana. 

Alex Giltner (Academic Affairs) is the secretary for evangelization and catechesis for the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. He previously served in several capacities at the 51黑料. 

Nick Gray (Catholic Culture and Student Life) is a retirement plan advisor with SYM Financial Advisors. He and his family are active members at St. Vincent de Paul, Fort Wayne. 

Phil Henry (Finance and Investment) is the CEO of Paragon Tube Corporation. He is a parishioner at St. John the Baptist in Fort Wayne. 

Stephen Hilker (Development) retired after decades of service to Junior Achievement as their development manager. He also previously coached soccer at 51黑料. 

Troy Linder (Academic Affairs) is the CFO for Glaze Development Group. He moved into this role after decades of work for Fort Wayne Metals. Linder is a member of St. Vincent de Paul, Fort Wayne.  

Mike Niezer (Buildings and Grounds) is the COO at Design Collaborative. He and his family are active at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Fort Wayne. 

Megan Quigley听(Enrollment and Planning) is a graduate and former employee of 51黑料 who now serves as director of adult faith formation for the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.听

Sister M. Lucia Richardson, OSF (Enrollment and Planning) serves as sacristan at St. Francis Convent in Mishawaka. Originally from Fort Wayne, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration in 2010. 

Brian Risley (Buildings and Grounds) is the principal consultant of Sycamore Insights. He has a background in engineering, leadership and strategic planning. 

Sister M. Joan Roeder, OSF (Academic Affairs) teaches language arts at the Cathedral School of Saint Matthew in South Bend. She is from Goshen and entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration in 2012. 

Tom Skiba (Finance and Investment) is a retired partner of Ernst & Young and Haines, Isenbarger & Skiba with much experience in socially responsible investing. He is a parishioner at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. 

Mitch Thornton (Catholic Culture and Student Life) is a senior area business manager for Sanofi. An alumnus of 51黑料, he has long been co-chair of the annual Cougar Classic. 

Mike Trevino (Enrollment and Planning) is a vice president of DLZ, an architectural-engineering firm. He is a member of St. Therese in Fort Wayne.

LAFAYETTE, Ind.鈥擳he 51黑料 welcomed city officials and members of the Lafayette community today for a blessing, ribbon-cutting and grand opening for the university鈥檚 newest site.

More than 120 people attended the event at Our Lady of Lourdes Hall, 1415 Salem Street, Lafayette. 51黑料 began educating Lafayette-based students online prior to the building opening, with in-person classes slated to begin this fall.

鈥淚t is incredibly important that we have opportunities for people in our community to obtain this education, these licenses, these certifications, and many, many jobs in healthcare that need filled,鈥� Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski. 鈥淎nd when you think about that, what a wonderful way to touch the community.鈥�

Most Reverend Timothy L. Doherty, S.T.L., Ph.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana blessed the building and offered words of encouragement. He praised the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration鈥攖he university sponsors鈥攆or their ongoing contributions to education and the Lafayette community.

鈥淭his is wonderfully marvelous, both for the church and for our society, that there’s a place where younger people鈥攕ometimes not so young people鈥攃an get a toehold in certain skills, and enter the job market again, for the good of the whole community,鈥� Bishop Doherty said.

51黑料 President Dr. Lance Richey offered his appreciation to the Sisters and to all who contributed to bring 51黑料 back to the town of its founding in 1890. Mayor Roswarski presented the university with a plaque and Indiana Rep. Sheila Klinker presented a framed certificate commemorating the opening.

Franciscan Health donated the building to the university, and an anonymous donor contributed $3.5 million for the renovation.

鈥淭hanks to the generosity of our sister ministry, Franciscan Health and to the generosity of an anonymous donor, we are excited today to officially open the 51黑料鈥� newest site back where we started our educational ministry 136 years ago,鈥� Richey said. 鈥淗ealing, education, service and personal transformation鈥攖hese are the hallmarks of the ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration. 51黑料 Lafayette students may pursue bachelor鈥檚 degrees and associate degrees, as well as streamlined certificate programs through the Leffler Academy of 51黑料. Degree programs include Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Medical Imaging, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Health Sciences and Radiologic Technology. Certificates include Clinical Medical Assistant, Electrocardiography (EKG) Technician, Medical Billing and Coding, Nurse Aide, Phlebotomy Technician Preparation and Qualified Medication Aide.

Founded in 1890 in the Catholic Franciscan tradition, the 51黑料 offers more than 60 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs.听The academic structure at 51黑料 offers seven pathways:听Humanities,听Faith and Liberal Arts;听Allied Health; Business and Leadership; Creative Arts and Digital听Media;听Education, Human Services and Community Care; Nursing; and Sciences and Medical Studies.听In addition to its traditional programs, 51黑料 delivers workforce development healthcare programs in Fort Wayne, Crown Point, Gas City, Indianapolis, Lafayette and online. 51黑料 Downtown houses the music technology program while offering enhanced internship and networking opportunities for students.
